SCIE vs ESCI: what is the difference?

Journal verification

How to check journal preservation

A journal being discoverable in a search engine is different from its articles being preserved. Check the exact title and years covered before relying on an archiving claim.

Start with the ISSN and reported holdings

The Keepers Registry lets you search titles or ISSNs to investigate reported preservation. Its participating archiving agencies supply holdings metadata; coverage must be interpreted for the specific journal and period.

  1. Copy the journal’s electronic and print ISSNs from its website. Keep them separate from its title and publisher.
  2. Search each identifier in the registry. Match the returned title and publication history before accepting the result.
  3. Record which agency reports holdings and which years or volumes are included. A partial run leaves questions about material outside that range.
  4. Open the agency’s own information when available. Ask about missing or recent volumes if the record does not answer your question.

The registry’s archiving-agency directory explains that participating services have different preservation and access arrangements. Consult the relevant service for its own terms.

Keep preservation separate from other checks

Archival holdingsWhat content is reported as preserved?Gaps, recent volumes and the agency’s access arrangements.

Keep these findings in separate fields in your journal evaluation. A positive result in one category does not fill the others.

If you cannot find a record

Record the result as unresolved and the date searched. Try the other ISSN, an earlier title or a corrected spelling. Ask the publisher for a direct holdings record and identify the institution responsible for preservation. Avoid treating absence from one search as proof of misconduct.

A useful question is: “Which agency preserves this exact journal and ISSN, and which published volumes are included?” Keep the reply with your evidence rather than relying on an archiving logo.

A worked example of what to record

Hypothetical example: a journal claims its entire run is archived, but the holdings record you inspect covers 2019–2023. Write “2019–2023 reported; later coverage unresolved,” retain the source link and ask about the gap. Do not rewrite this as “all content preserved.”

For a US institution’s publication requirements, share the record with your scholarly-communications or medical librarian. Then complete indexing verification and the remaining journal checks.
